IUI – Intrauterine Insemination

What is IUI?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination, is a medical procedure used to help individuals or couples with fertility issues become pregnant. During IUI, sperm is carefully placed directly into the woman’s uterus to increase the chances of fertilization. This procedure is typically used when there is a known issue with sperm quality or motility, unexplained infertility, or when the cause of infertility is cervical mucus problems.

How is IUI different from IVF?

IUI is a less invasive and less expensive fertility treatment option compared to in vitro fertilization (IVF). It’s typically used when there is a specific issue with the sperm, and the woman’s reproductive system is generally healthy. However, IUI success rates can vary depending on individual circumstances and underlying causes of infertility. Multiple cycles of IUI may be required to achieve pregnancy.

Why would one need IUI?

  • IUI would benefit you of the make partner has borderline low motile sperm count.
  • You cannot have sex due to disabilities or injuries.
  • The female partner has Endometriosis.

What are the prerequisites for IUI?

The female partner must have at least one healthy, unscarred fallopian tube to make it possible for the egg to travel to the uterus.

How is IUI done?

IUI is carried out in the following steps :-

  • Deciding whether to use fertility drugs is an important step to begin with. If only the make partner is the cause of infertility the female partner may not use fertility drugs lest it increase the chances of multiple pregnancy. A multiple pregnancy, especially at an advanced age increases the chance of miscarriage.
  • Ultrasound to determine the position and maturity of the egg is carried out so the right time for the placement of sperm can be estimated.
  • The sperm is placed near the egg for maximize fertilizations probability.

It’s important to consult with a fertility specialist to determine the most suitable treatment for your specific situation, whether it’s IUI, IVF, or other assisted reproductive technologies.
