Tuberculosis And Infertility – An Infectious Damage To Pregnancy
Tuberculosis is a bacterium generated disease that is usually confined to the lungs. In some cases though, the bacteria may move via the circulatory tracts to other parts of the body specifically the reproductive organs. In such cases when the genital organs of a man or a woman are infected by the tuberculosis bacillus the conditions is known as Genital Tuberculosis or Genital T.B.
Effects of Genital T.B. In Men –In men, the bacteria may reach the testicular area and cause of epididymo-orchitis. This causes swelling, irritation and pain in the testicles and if untreated may cause a stoppage in the addition of sperm in semen, thereby incapacitating the reproductive ability of the patient.
Effects Of Genital T.B. In Women – In women, the bacteria may reach the uterine tract infecting the fallopian tubes and ovaries. Prolonged undetected exposure to the bacillus in the genital area may cause permanent damage to the fallopian tubes, thereby irreversibly blocking the passage of fertilized ova to the uterus.
Spread Of T.B. – In India according to some estimates 40% of the population carries the Tuberculosis bacterium. However only 1% of them actually have the disease since the bacillus can stay dormant in the human body for up to 10-20 years. Only the people who have been actively infected by the bacteria can spread it by being having prolonged contact and sexual intercourse with uninfected persons. Casual and short term contact with infected people does not spread T.B.
Treatment Of Genital T.B. – At Dr. Nandita Palshetkar IVF clinics, one of the best IVF doctors in India will administer the LIT (Lymphocyte Immune Therapy) – a kind of antibacterial treatment – for 6–8 months. Please contact at the earliest since untreated Genital T.B. may permanently make natural pregnancy impossible.
